It is the ability to distinguish between genuine and fake commands, rather than physical ability, that usually matters in the game in most cases, the action just needs to be attempted. Moving on to the unsigned (but presumably Shimada-made) katana’s hamon, it’s narrower and much less starkly colored than the Muramasa’s, with the ha section having almost a milky whiteness to it. Aside from the cool-factor of having a sword on your sword, Fudo Myoo is worshipped as a destroyer of evil, and so the image of the Kurikara here is likely meant as a ward against misfortune and dark forces. That’s an image of the Kurikara, sword of the deity Fudo Myoo (also known as Acala), wrapped in flame with a dragon coiled around it. What makes it really dramatic, though, is what’s on the flat of the blade. It’s not only longer than the Muramasa wakizashi, but has a much more dynamic curve. With no inscription to show off on the hilt’s metal, the sword is displayed with its full grip. ▼ “Master-level samurai weaponsmithing runs in our family” is one of the cooler things a father and son can say. However, appraisers believe that this katana was likely forged by Shimada Hirosuke, another smith of the late Muromachi period and son of Shimada Gisuke, the blacksmith who made the Otegine, one of the Three Great Spears of Japan. In contrast to the Muramasa, this is a mumei, or “uninscripted” sword, meaning that no name is engraved on the hilt. With that, let’s lift our gaze up to the grandiose katana hanging above the Muramasa wakizashi. ▼ The hamon (刃文) curving into the jizoboshi (地蔵帽子) The sword also has what’s called a jizoboshi pattern near its tip, which resembles the shape of the protective Buddha statues (jizo) seen at temples and along roadsides in Japan, often outfitted with a round cloth cap (boshi). Many Muramasa swords have a blocky, repeating pattern to their hamon, referred to as hakoba (“box edge”), which can be clearly seen on this wakizashi. ▼ The ha (刃) has a lighter color than the jigane (地鉄). Japanese swords are very much works of art, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the hamon, or tempering line.Īppraisers and scholars refer to the section between the line as the edge as the ha, or while the area between the line and the sword’s unsharpened inner curve is the jigane. Speaking of the hilt, the ones on Muramasa swords have a unique shape that’s come to be called “tanagobara,” or “fish belly,” because their rounded taper resembles a plump fish. It’s common for Japanese swordsmiths to “sign” their work by engraving their name into the hilt, and sure enough, you can see “Muramasa” (村正) here. This particular wakizashi was forged by the second-generation Muramasa, considered the most skillful of the six successors, and was made in the late Muromachi period (which ended in 1573). Muramasa was actually the name of a line of swordsmiths who produced some of the finest swords Japan has ever seen (and also among the most feared, as some developed reputations as “cursed demon swords”). So while the katana on top is the flashier weapon, let’s start with the wakizashi short sword underneath it, because it’s a Muramasa sword. Good things often come in small packages, and sometimes that goes for swords too. No, they’re not for sale, but they are on display for visitors to admire, and so we recently made our way to the Touken Ranbu Yorozuyahonpo inside Tokyo’s Shibuya Parco complex to see two very special new arrivals for ourselves. You can find all sorts of plushies, pins, and other trinkets at Touken Ranbu Yorozuyahonpo, the specialty shop dedicated to video game/anime franchise Touken Ranbu. New businesses: Not enough start-up support?Ī growing contingency of economists believe start-ups are the most reliable job creators, pointing to studies that show new firms are responsible for nearly all of the nation’s net job growth every year (total job gains minus total job losses). Small business lobbyists have asked lawmakers to support proposals to lower individual tax rates across the board, eliminate time-consuming regulations, bring down the cost of health care and stop borrowing rates from surging - each of which, they say, forces employers to pull back on investing capital back into their firms.Īt the same time, overall economic uncertainty and weak sales have been cited as a major concern ever since the recession, and small business owners have urged elected officials to take any and all steps to put more money back in the hands of their customers. “Public policy should focus on what might be done to spur those firms to re-employ workers who had jobs at the peak of the expansion.” “The jobs problem we face today, in fact, is that employment is below capacity in existing firms,” Dunkelberg wrote earlier this month, noting that many of the 8 million workers who lost their jobs during the recession were employed by small businesses. It also happens when they bring back workers they let go during tough times. Moreover, adding new positions isn’t the only way existing small businesses create jobs, according to Bill Dunkelberg, chief economist for the National Federation of Independent Business. In a column last week, SBA Administrator Karen Mills argued that “while start-ups receive a great deal of attention, there is another segment of businesses that can fuel economic growth-existing establishments.” Only one in four small business owners are interested in expanding their company, according to research at the University of Chicago once they reach a certain size, the best case scenario for most is that they simply hold steady.īut those that are hiring are helping, creating 8.7 million jobs between March 2011 and March 2012, and some believe policymakers should simply help more firms join that small group of expanders. That’s largely because most employers aren’t interested in growing past a certain point. ![]() ![]() A study by the Kauffman Foundation, an entrepreneurship research organization, showed that existing firms actually lost about a million more jobs than they added every year between 19. Related: How do you build a business in the digital age?įurthermore, employing a large number of workers doesn’t necessarily translate into creating a large number of new jobs. The SBA considers firms with fewer than 500 employees small, placing nearly every business in the country (99.7 percent of firms that have employees) under that umbrella term - thus, it is no surprise they employ the most workers.Ī more strict definition of small business, using a limit of 50 employees, would still include the vast majority of the country’s businesses, but it would trim their share of the workforce to less than a third. However, the definition of “small business” provides important context for those statistics. Small Business Administration that show small firms employ just over half of the private-sector workforce and created nearly two-thirds of nation’s net new jobs over the past decade and a half. In support of that title, many have cited studies from the U.S. President Obama has used that line on several occasions to describe the importance of small businesses, as have scores of other politicians. ![]() ![]() ![]() Panasonic’s advanced 4:4:4 colour subsampling offers greater precision and colour detail than you’ll find on rival higher-end models.
